The 12 historic schools are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. All properties are in need of preservation and restoration. Three properties have teacherage. Friends of Gillespie County Country Schools is responsible for preserving and ensuring that these former schools will be available to the public as community centers and parks. Grants from the Lower Colorado River Authority, City and County HOT funds, corporate and private donations help with restoration restoration and preservation of these historic treasures. With these funds, old roofs were replaced, stonework restored and restrooms replaced outhouses. Water wells were donated by L&L Drilling and Virdell Drilling.
